Food Diary: 9 June 2012

To prepare ourselves for another day of moving and unpacking (and little did we know at the time, assembly of flat-box furniture), Mahir and I went to Portage Bay Cafe for breakfast. Since I've been there before, I knew to call at least an hour before and make a reservation, because if you don't you can easily wait 45 minutes or more for a table on a weekend.

Why is it so popular, you may be wondering? Well, Portage Bay is a magical place where you can go from having a vastly overpriced bowl of oatmeal like this:

Steel-cut oatmeal, cooked in water and 2% milk ($8)

Into this!:

With the addition of sliced strawberries, peaches, raspberries (frozen and thawed), and the best whipped cream I've ever had (300 Cal for oatmeal, 210 Cal for toppings).

Portage Bay allows you trips to their "toppings bar", which has things like fruit, whipped cream, and maple syrup for you to add to their pancakes, French toast, oatmeal, etc. They say, "take all you want, but eat all you take". It was absolutely delicious.

And then (seven hours later) we went to Burgermaster on Aurora Avenue, which I think is my favorite fast food restaurant because of their phenomenally crispy French fries. A tip: don't go to the Burgermaster in University District, but the ones in Bellevue and on Aurora are very good. The one in U District is awful, and not even a drive-up like the others in the chain!

Hamburger, no relish, but with tomato, lettuce, and mustard (400 Cal).

French fries, the only size they have. Absolutely my favorite fries (300 Cal).

A single Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut (200 Cal), fresh off of the conveyor belt. It was very difficult to only eat one.
